How much weight can the floating shelves hold?

This is perhaps what separates Top Shelf UK from anyone else. Whereas most floating shelves are primarily decorative and can only usually be used to display a number of small items such as photos small ornaments.

Rest assured that the weight-bearing capacity of our floating shelves are greatly increased due to the solid construction of the shelves, heavy duty concealed shelf supports and high quality fixings.

As a rule of thumb – Each shelf support can hold up to 25kg and shelf supports are added every 600mm plus one on each end.

Therefore a 1000mm shelf which has three shelf supports can hold up to 75kg – The average weight of a fully grown man! (This is based on installation to a solid wall).

Will the floating shelves tilt forward when more weight is put on them?

No, never! Another great feature of floating shelves by Top Shelf UK. Our concealed shelf supports can be adjusted in tilt simply by screwing the spigot further into the bracket. This counteracts any more weight applied and keeps the shelf level – forever!

Can I fit floating shelves to plasterboard wall?

Yes, although there are one of two things you need to do;

1.       Locate the timer studs - You cannot install to just the plaster board it is simply impossible even with plasterboard fixings. The shelf brackets need to be fixed straight into the timber work. Once you have found them (usually 600mm apart as standard), let us know and we can position the brackets in the shelf to suit. We will not charge extra for this.

2.       Pre installation work - For one reason or another you may not be able to use the timber stud work – Eg. The shelves may not reach. If this is the case you need to bridge the timber work, don’t worry we have a great step by step guide which shows you what to do. click here.

How difficult is it to install the shelves?

On a scale of 1-10 where 1 is being a complete novice and 10 is being a skilled tradesperson we would say… 6!

We provide a simple, step by step installation guide with all orders. We do always suggest that you consult an experienced tradesperson first, mainly to check for hidden live wires and pipes – Better to be safe than sorry.

How many brackets will I get?

Brackets are supplied one on each end of the shelf and a maximum of 600mm apart in between;

·         600mm Shelf = 2 shelf brackets

·         900mm Shelf = 3 shelf brackets

·         1200mm Shelf = 3 shelf brackets

·         1800mm Shelf = 4 shelf brackets

How do I look after my shelves?

All of our shelves can be cleaned using normal furniture polish.

Are your solid wood shelves 100% solid wood?

Of course! All of our timber is hand-picked from our local merchant and only the very best is selected. The timber we use is also kiln dried, this is a process that sucks the moisture out of the wood preventing the finished shelf from warping, twisting and splitting over time.

Do you provide samples?

Yes free samples can be selected here.

I want a floating shelf wider than 250mm, is this possible?

Yes - We can supply floating shelves up to 600mm deep using our re-bar system. These are currently not available to buy online so please contact us for a quotation.

Do you supply shelves for alcoves?

Yes - For alcove shelves we supply supporting battens instead of concealed brackets. These battens simply fix to both sides and back of the wall. The shelf then simply slots over the battens maintaining the floating effect. Alcove shelves are currently not available to buy online so please contact us for a quotation.

Can I put my television on a floating shelf?

Our floating shelves will easily support the weight of a flat screen TV but it won’t stop it getting accidently knocked off. We strongly advise also fixing the TV to the wall.

Can I order thicker or thinner shelves?

The thinnest floating shelf we can manufacture is 26mm. The maximum thickness really depends on the material. Laminated and veneered shelves can be produced to whatever thick you require. Solid wood shelves are subject to availability at the time.

Can I paint my shelf?

Yes – We supply ready to paint floating shelves in all sizes.

Do you offer a stain matching service?

Yes – We can stain match our solid wood and veneered shelves to your existing furniture. We just need a sample to match to.

Do your prices include VAT?

VAT – currently at 20% is added and listed during check out. We can provide a VAT receipt upon request.

Are your shelves suitable for a kitchen?

Yes - Our floating shelves are strong enough to hold stacks of dishes or just about anything you decide to load them up with. We can match the finish on your kitchen cabinets as well.
